Persephone, Goddess of Fertility & the Underworld, was the daughter of Demeter, Greek Goddess of Agriculture. She was abducted by Hades and taken to his Underworld.
Demeter, distraught at Persephone’s loss, caused the fruitfulness of Earth to fail. Widespread famine ensued as she searched for Persephone.
Finally she found her in Hade’s realm and demanded her return. But, Hades had tricked Persephone into eating a handful of pomegranate seeds. This sealed her fate and forced her to spend the dark half of the year in the Underworld and re-emerge every spring to the light of our world, symbolizing the cycle of life, death, & rebirth.
