In Celtic mythology, The Cailleach was known as the Winter Queen. She ruled the dark, cold half of the year.

Legend says that she ushered in winter every Samhain, October 31, by riding across the night sky on the back of her sacred wolf. When she landed, she struck the ground with her staff causing the ground to freeze and winter began.
