During a stay in Merida, in the state of Yucatán in Mexico a few years ago I was very inspired by a statue of the Virgin Mary in the Cathedral of Merida. She stood atop a globe. I painted my own version of her, not as the Christian Mary but as a goddess of Heaven and Earth.
